Register a .at domain: a step-by-step guide for Austria

From choosing a name to an active domain: prepare holder details, place your order and connect DNS for your Austrian web address.

The essentials

You need an available name, a verified customer account and accurate holder details. A standard new .at registration at atdomain.at costs €12.99 total price for one year. Successful payment alone does not confirm registration.

1. Check your name and spelling

Start by searching for the full address ending in .at. If you enter only a name, check the extension shown in the results. Say the address aloud: is it understandable by phone and does it fit your project? An available domain does not establish your right to use a brand name. Research existing names separately before putting the address on printed material or a shop sign.

2. Choose the correct account and holder

Create an account with an email address that already works and verify it. Do not depend on a mailbox under the domain you are about to register. Decide who should hold the domain: you as an individual or an organisation. For a company, use its full legal name in the holder details. Avoid accidentally listing a technical contractor instead of the intended holder.

  • Full name or legal organisation name.
  • Accurate postal address and a reachable telephone number.
  • A verified email address that already works.

3. Review the total and order details

A standard new .at domain costs €12.99 total price for the first year. Renewal currently costs €15.99 total price per additional year and is handled manually through your account. Before paying, review the full name, contact details and contract confirmations. Card payment takes place on atdomain.at. A basket does not reserve the domain; availability can change before registration.

4. Distinguish payment from registration

After payment, the order status shows registration progress. Wait for confirmation before announcing that the name is secured. Once registration succeeds, the domain appears in your account and a confirmation email is sent. If an order remains under review, do not immediately submit the same order again. Keep the order reference and contact support so the existing order can be checked.

5. Connect a website or email service afterwards

Registration secures the name; it does not create a website or mailbox. Manage DNS records and nameservers in your account. For an existing website, use the records supplied by its service. For email, use the mail provider’s instructions. After making changes, test the website and send and receive email. Cached DNS data means updates do not become visible everywhere at the same moment.

An idea needs an address.
