Domain without hosting

Buy a domain without hosting: register .at separately

You do not need a new website to register a domain. Learn how domain registration, DNS, hosting and email fit together and what to budget for.

The essentials

Yes, you can register .at without a hosting package. atdomain.at includes domain management, default nameservers and DNS management. Obtain website hosting and mailboxes separately from the services you choose.

Domain registration, DNS and hosting do different jobs

The domain is your web address. DNS connects that address to the relevant services. Hosting supplies the files or application for a website, while an email service runs mailboxes. Different providers can handle each part. A domain can therefore be useful before a project launches or when your website is already hosted elsewhere. You do not need another hosting package just to register the name.

What a standalone .at registration includes

A new domain is initially registered for one year. The total price for a standard new registration is €12.99. Manage the domain in your account, edit DNS with our default nameservers or enter your own nameservers. Hosting, website builders and mailboxes are separate services. A domain without a website is still registered and must be renewed in time if you want to keep using it.

Connect an existing website

First check whether your website service supports a custom domain on your chosen plan. It may supply an IP address for A or AAAA records, or a destination hostname for a CNAME. Copy its instructions accurately; a DNS destination is generally not a full URL with https:// and a page path. Account for both the root domain and www. Your website service also needs to support an HTTPS certificate for the new address.

Use a redirect or email alone

To forward visitors to another web address, use a service that performs an HTTP redirect. An A or CNAME record does not itself change the address in a browser. For email alone, choose a mail service, create mailboxes there and enter its DNS records. You do not need a website for this. Web redirects and email are separate: forwarding a web address does not set up incoming mail.

Compare ongoing costs realistically

Look beyond the first-year price. Our current .at renewal total is €15.99 per year. Your website and mail services have their own charges. Record where the domain, DNS and services are managed and who has access. That makes future renewals and service changes easier to plan. Moving a website does not automatically require moving the domain registration.

An idea needs an address.
