.at domain with or without a hyphen?
Choose a clear spelling for your Austrian domain. Compare readability, phone and email use, and the total registration and renewal prices for keeping one or two .at names.

An already registered .at domain cannot be registered again as a new domain. First check the exact name and distinguish a registered result from a failed lookup. Then compare a few clear alternatives and research possible naming conflicts. If you already hold the domain, consider a transfer instead.

Check the complete name, extension and spelling. An already registered .at domain cannot be registered again as a new domain. A message saying that the check could not be completed instead means there is no reliable result at that moment. Wait for a successful check rather than ruling out the name. An available search result is not a reservation either. Order only after reviewing the spelling, then check the registration status in your account. A search, a basket and a confirmed registration are separate stages. If a message is unclear, note the name, time and exact wording for support.
Check domain availability againA name can be registered even when no finished website appears there. It might be used only for email, kept for a later project or undergoing a technical change. A parking page or a browser error therefore does not prove that registration is available. Use a current domain lookup for that question. Austria’s public information portal also identifies the nic.at lookup as a way to check .at availability. Do not try to acquire a domain by adding your own DNS records: DNS connects services to a domain already under management; it does not replace registration. If it is your existing domain, check your current account and recorded holder first.
Do not begin with twenty random additions. Write down the part of your name people need to recognise and the words that accurately describe the offer. Develop three candidates: the name with a relevant activity, a pronounceable longer form and an understandable abbreviation. A place name can help when it is a lasting part of the project; a random location added only for availability rarely improves clarity. The pattern “project name + workshop” is a brainstorming tool, not a checked available address. Search each completed combination separately. Avoid extra words that suggest services or an official status your project does not have.
Decide whether a hyphen helps
Compare candidates around how people will actually share the address. A clear .at address may suit an Austrian audience. Another extension is a different domain name and needs its own availability check. It does not automatically resolve possible naming conflicts. Decide around your visitors rather than the first-year price alone. Will someone understand the extension over the phone? Could email accidentally go to the existing version? Is the difference visible on a small business card? The table highlights typical trade-offs; it does not establish availability or legal clearance for any candidate.
| Candidate | Check carefully | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Name with an activity | Readability and lasting relevance | An added word eliminates naming conflicts |
| Hyphenated version | Spoken spelling and confusion | You control the unhyphenated version |
| Another extension | Audience, price and email confusion | The same name is available there |
Ask someone to type the name after hearing it once. Explain hyphens, numbers or umlauts afterwards so you can see where confusion occurs. Also try a potential contact address with the part before the @. A long domain can be more noticeable in an email signature than in a logo. Open a simple note on a phone and review the whole spelling at normal text size. If two candidates look nearly identical, the shorter one is not automatically better. Choose the version your audience recognises and enters more reliably. The aim is a clear route to your offer, not a promise of better search positions.
An available name does not confirm that you may use it for your project. nic.at explains that registration does not include a check of third-party rights. The Austrian Patent Office recommends researching identical and similar existing marks. Before committing to a logo, print materials and an order, investigate the chosen wording and possible confusion too. Record the exact spelling you checked. If there may be a conflict, obtain qualified guidance before committing. An additional hyphen or different extension is not a universal solution. This review still matters when the original choice is registered and the alternative appears technically available.
Prepare your name research before ordering
The search may say registered because you already manage the name elsewhere. Moving it to us is then a transfer, not a new registration. A transfer also does not replace a change of holder. Establish who is authorised to manage the name and document the website, email and active nameservers before moving it. Enter an authorisation code only in the designated secure process, never in a public message. If someone else holds the domain, a transfer of ownership needs their valid cooperation; choosing an available alternative is a separate decision. Do not rely on an assumed deletion date or send payment just because an unfamiliar party offers the name.
Move your existing domain to usDistinguish a transfer from a change of holderRecheck your selected alternative immediately before ordering. A new standard .at domain currently costs €12.99 total for the first year with us; renewal costs €15.99 total per additional year. For new .at domains, you can choose three years of prepaid coverage for one €39.00 total payment: registration and two annual renewals without further payment. This saves €5.97 against €44.97 in annual payments at today’s prices. Your paid-through date and annually updated technical expiry are separate account details. Arrange further renewal in good time afterwards at the offered price; there is no automatic card charge. The package excludes transfers and existing-domain renewals. Hosting and mailboxes are not included.
